When it comes to American sports cars, you would be hard-pressed to find two more perfect examples than the Camaro and the Mustang. These are the quintessential sport or muscle cars that across decades and through numerous incarnations have been dominating the roads of America. Such rich histories can make choosing between the two of them difficult, which is why it is helpful to compare what they have to offer in a battle of the 2019 Chevy Camaro vs 2019 Ford Mustang for ultimate sports car supremacy.
Since these are serious performance vehicles, the prices on them can quickly go way up as you start to add options and look at different trim levels and models. In order to keep things fair, it is important to compare similar models at close price points because a fully loaded Camaro is far beyond what you get in the starting build of a Mustang. But as you look at each vehicle in different configurations, certain patterns begin to emerge.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro offers more power and performance overall, with a high-end engine that beats what you can get in the 2019 Ford Mustang. Though both are comfortable inside and have incredible technology throughout, the Camaro has a few extra things to offer that make it tough to beat. Safety might not be your first thought when looking at sports cars, but at high speeds, these features are more important than ever, and the 2019 Chevy Camaro has an edge over the Ford Mustang when it comes to overall safety options.
When it comes to a couple of high-performance sports cars like the 2019 Chevy Camaro and the 2019 Ford Mustang, there’s no better place to start than with the engine, the beating heart of the beast. Both of these cars have a number of different engines available, each tied to certain models or trim levels on offer. Let’s take a look at three different engines available with each of these cars: the starting engine, a high-end option, and the very best engine you can get in a each of them.
The starting engine in the 2019 Chevy Camaro is a 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine that provides up to 275hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. On the other hand, the starting engine in many models of the 2019 Ford Mustang is a 2.3L EcoBoost engine that provides up to 310hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. So if you are going with the starting engines in these cars, the Mustang takes an early lead.
High-end engines in these two vehicles are only available with certain trim levels and models, so keep that in mind as you compare these cars. There is an available 6.2L V8 DI engine with the 2019 Chevy Camaro that offers 455hp and 455 lb.-ft. of torque, which is a terrific option if you want more power. The 2019 Ford Mustang has an available 5.0L V8 engine with certain models that provides up to 460hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, which is quite comparable with the power from the Camaro. Either of these engines will definitely put you back in your seat.
For optimal power, however, you need to look at the very best engine available with these two cars. These are only found at the highest trim level and price point, but they are truly impressive. The 2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1 has a 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine that provides an amazing 650hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque. On the other hand, the 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 features a 5.2L Ti-VCT V8 engine that gives up to 526hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. While both of these are impressive, the Chevy Camaro clearly races ahead.
Wanting to go fast doesn’t mean giving up on luxury and comfort, so modern sports cars have great options for interior details. It’s important to note that many of these features are only available at certain trim levels or require upgrades, so keep that in mind. To keep things simple, however, let’s look at what’s available overall if you are interested in as luxurious an interior for your sports car as possible.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro has an excellent array of interior options including front bucket seats with available 8-way power driver seat and 6-way power front passenger seat, both of which can be heated. There is a rear folding bench seat, and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel available. The Camaro also has available dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12v power outlet, and a leather-wrapped shift knob.
By comparison, the 2019 Ford Mustang includes a range of great interior features and options, but falls short in a few ways. It has available leather-trimmed heated front seats, an option for a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone temperature control. The front passenger seat is a 6-way adjustable bucket seat, as is the driver seat, which means it is not quite as customizable as the one found in the Chevy Camaro.
The technology features in both the 2019 Chevy Camaro and the 2019 Ford Mustang are absolutely fantastic, particularly at higher trim levels. A lot of these features are optional and only available at certain trim levels or on particular models, so keep that in mind. As with most things in life, the more you can spend on a sports car, the more options and features it can have.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro has an available 8-inch color driver information center in addition to an 8-inch Infotainment display with Navigation. There is an option for a 9-speaker Bose premium audio system, keyless open and start, and a rear camera mirror that displays on the rearview mirror itself. One of the most impressive features is a head-up display that projects vehicle information onto the windshield in a low area so it is out of the way but easy to see without taking your eyes off the road.
There are great technology options for the 2019 Ford Mustang as well, though one or two things could be improved upon. One of the most impressive options is a 12-inch instrument cluster that is an LCD screen and there is also a touchscreen Navigation system with voice activation. There is an available auto-dimming rearview mirror, though the rear-facing camera does not display on it. You cannot get a head-up display projection with the Ford Mustang like you can with the Camaro, which is a bit of a disappointment.
Sadly, in the past, the words “sports car” and “safety” have rarely been associated with each other, but there is no other vehicle where safety features are more important. The high speeds that sports cars can travel, and their low profiles, make safety features incredibly important to prevent collisions and protect people if the unthinkable does occur. While the 2019 Chevy Camaro has a robust suite of available safety features, the Ford Mustang is lacking in some key areas.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro includes StabiliTrak for stability and traction control, with a thorough airbag system and 3-point seatbelts. Available safety features include rear park assist, rear cross traffic alert, and forward collision alert to help a driver avoid a crash. There is also available lane change alert that includes a side blind zone alert, and even a teen driver system that enables certain safety features when a young driver is behind the wheel.
Safety features in the 2019 Ford Mustang are pretty good, but there is room for improvement. The Mustang includes 3-point seatbelts along with knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, dual front airbags, and side-impact airbags for the front seats. There is an available blind spot information system and cross-traffic alert, but they are included with a technology package that includes Navigation and superior speakers, which has nothing to do with overall safety. There are some good things here, but Ford has missed some safety technology that would be a welcome addition.
