How does Automatic Crash Response work in a vehicle?

It’s simple. Built-in sensors in your vehicle notify an OnStar advisor that your vehicle has been in a collision. It uses the impact of the collision to make the determination, which means that the system can notify an advisor whether you’ve been in a crash with another vehicle or crashed into a stationary object. That advisor can then contact emergency services for you if needed.

What should I do if I have been in a car crash?

There are a few things that are important to do when you’ve been in a vehicle accident. These can keep you and others safe.

  • Stay in your vehicle until you are certain that it is safe to leave. Sometimes, a car crash can set off a chain reaction. This is especially true in inclement weather. For that reason, you should stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on, which is safer than being hit by an oncoming vehicle outside of your car.
  • Contact emergency services. For legal and safety reasons, you should do this as soon as possible. OnStar can do this for you, but if you don’t have OnStar, you’ll have to do it yourself.
  • Put your car in park and put on your hazard lights. In minor crashes, you might move your vehicle out of traffic, but if you can’t move your vehicle, at least turn on the hazard lights and put it in park.
